Description

A two-prong strainer hooks over the inside rim of a shaker tin or mixing glass on two fixed prongs rather than a coiled spring. Turn the tin or glass towards the pouring lip, hold the strainer against the rim with a finger, and pour — the prongs hold back the ice while the drink runs through the gaps around them.

Because there's no spring to flex and seal against the shape of the vessel, it works best with a standard tin or mixing glass rather than an oddly shaped one, and it lets more fine ice chips and bits of muddled fruit through than a Hawthorne strainer does. If you're shaking drinks with muddled ingredients, herbs, or crushed ice, plan to double strain through a separate fine mesh strainer as well. For straightforward drinks shaken over cubed ice, it's a simple, compact tool that many bartenders prefer to a bulkier Hawthorne.

Questions about this product

What's the difference between a two-prong strainer and a Hawthorne strainer?

A Hawthorne strainer has a coiled spring around the edge, which flexes to seal against differently shaped glasses and catches fine ice and pulp more effectively. A two-prong strainer has no spring u2014 just two fixed prongs that hook over the rim u2014 so it's simpler and more compact but lets a bit more through, especially with muddled ingredients or crushed ice. Both do the same basic job; the spring is what makes a Hawthorne more forgiving.

Do I need to double strain when using this?

For drinks made with clear spirits shaken over standard ice cubes, no u2014 this strainer holds ice back perfectly well on its own. For drinks made with muddled fruit, fresh herbs, or crushed ice, some fine particles will get through the gaps around the prongs, so pour a second time through a separate fine mesh strainer if you want a completely clean result. Whether that extra step is worth it comes down to personal preference and the drink.
