Description

A Hawthorne strainer sits over the rim of a shaker tin or mixing glass and holds back ice, muddled fruit and herb matter while you pour a drink into a glass. The coiled spring wraps the underside of the flat metal body and flexes to seal against the curve of the vessel, which gives a tighter, more adjustable seal than the small built-in strainer cap on a cobbler shaker. The four prongs on the top edge locate the strainer against the rim so it doesn't slide off mid-pour, and let you tip it to control how fine or open the pour is.

This is standard kit for anyone building or straining drinks in a mixing glass, since a mixing glass has no built-in strainer of its own. It's also useful with a cobbler shaker when you want a finer strain than the built-in cap allows, for example when muddled ingredients are involved. The spring is removable for a proper clean, which matters, since pulp and pips can lodge in the coils. It's a simple, inexpensive piece of kit and there's little reason to spend more on a fancier version unless you want a different finish.

Questions about this product

What's the difference between a four-prong and a two-prong Hawthorne strainer?

The prongs sit on top of the strainer body and hook over the rim to stop it sliding around while you pour. A four-prong version locates more securely across a wider range of tin and glass diameters, which is useful if you switch between different shakers or mixing glasses. A two-prong version is lighter and slightly easier to fit in a tight glass, but can be less stable on wider tins.

Do I need a Hawthorne strainer if my shaker already has a built-in strainer cap?

For plain shaken drinks with just ice, the built-in cap is usually enough. You'll want a separate Hawthorne strainer when muddled fruit, herbs, or fine ice shards are involved, since the spring gives a tighter, adjustable seal that catches more debris. It's also essential if you use a mixing glass for stirred drinks, which has no strainer of its own.
