Keg dispense equipment

Keg dispense equipment is the hardware between the keg and the tap — the couplers, connectors, valves and fittings that make a pressurised system work.

  • Check pressure, then temperature, then the line u2014 in that order
  • Keep spare washers and seals; they are what actually fail
  • Every fitting has to match the bore either side of it

A keg system is a chain and it only works if every link matches. The coupler has to suit the keg, the fittings have to suit the line bore, and the gas has to be right for the beer. Most dispense faults trace back to one mismatch in that chain rather than to a failed component.

How to choose

What to know

When something goes wrong, the order to check is usually gas pressure, then temperature, then the line. Beer pouring all head is most often pressure set too high or beer too warm; beer pouring slowly and flat is most often pressure too low or a restriction in the line. It is worth ruling those out before replacing anything.

What to know

Keep the consumables in stock. Washers, seals and O-rings are what actually fail, they cost very little, and not having one on a Friday evening closes a line for the weekend.

Common questions

My keg beer is all head u2014 what is wrong?

Usually gas pressure set too high, or the beer being too warm. Check the low-pressure gauge and the cellar or cooler temperature before you start changing parts. A dirty line will do it too.

My keg beer pours slowly and flat.

Usually the opposite: pressure set too low, or a restriction somewhere in the line. Check the regulator setting, then look for a kink or a partially closed valve.
