Description

A julep strainer is a shallow, perforated bowl with a handle and a curved lip, designed to sit inside the mouth of a mixing glass rather than hook over a tin. Once your drink is stirred, drop it into the glass so the bowl faces down over the liquid, hold it in place with a finger through the handle, and pour. It's the traditional pairing for a mixing glass and the standard tool for stirred drinks like a Martini or a Manhattan.

It isn't the right tool for a shaker tin — the curved bowl doesn't seat against a tin's rim properly, so use a Hawthorne or two-prong strainer for anything you shake. If you only ever shake cocktails, you probably don't need a julep strainer at all. If you stir drinks regularly, it's worth having one rather than making do with a Hawthorne on a mixing glass, which works but doesn't sit as neatly. The copper finish is plating over steel, so hand wash it to keep it looking good.

Questions about this product

Can I use a julep strainer with a shaker tin instead of a mixing glass?

Not really. A julep strainer's curved bowl is shaped to sit inside a mixing glass, not to hook over the rim of a shaker tin, so it won't seat securely and drink will spill around the edges. For tins, use a Hawthorne or two-prong strainer instead u2014 both are designed to hook against a tin's rim. Keep the julep strainer for stirred drinks made in a mixing glass, which is what it's built for.

Do I actually need a julep strainer if I already have a Hawthorne?

Not strictly u2014 a Hawthorne strainer will work on a mixing glass in a pinch. But a julep strainer sits more neatly inside a glass, without relying on the spring coil a Hawthorne needs to seal against a tin, and it's the traditional choice for stirred drinks. If you stir Martinis, Manhattans or Negronis often, it's a cheap addition worth having; if you rarely stir, you can safely skip it.
