Description

This is the classic flat bottle opener: no lever, no wall fixing, just a shaped edge that hooks under a crown cap and pops it off with a bit of leverage from your wrist. It's about as simple as a bar tool gets, which is its main strength — there's nothing to adjust, break or wear out, and it works on any standard crown-capped bottle.

It suits kitchens, back bars and anywhere you need an opener to hand without fixing anything to the counter, and it's cheap enough to keep several around so one is never far away. The honest downside is that it's easy to lose, since it doesn't attach to anything, and it gives less leverage than a bar blade or under counter opener if you're getting through a lot of bottles in a session. For front-of-house speed with heavier use, the bar blade or under counter opener will serve you better.

Questions about this product

What's the difference between this and a bar blade opener?

This is a small, flat handheld opener with no handle beyond its own shape, best suited to occasional or kitchen use. A bar blade opener is longer, at 7 inches, with a proper handle designed for repeated one-handed use during service, giving better grip and leverage. If you're opening bottles constantly during a shift, the bar blade is the better tool; for occasional use, this simpler opener does the job.

Will this work on all bottle caps?

It's designed for standard crown caps, which cover the vast majority of beer and soft drink bottles sold in the UK. It won't help with screw caps or swing-top bottles, which don't need an opener, or with non-standard cap designs, though these are uncommon.
