Description

The waiter's friend is the standard tool of table and bar service for good reason: it folds down to pocket size but covers three jobs. A small hinged knife cuts through foil capsules, a worm screw handles corks with a two-stage lever for a smooth, controlled pull, and a fold-out notch at the end works as a conventional bottle opener for beer and soft drinks. Everything folds flat into the handle when not in use.

Because it handles both wine and bottled drinks, it's the natural choice for anyone serving a mixed bar, working front of house, or simply wanting one tool instead of two separate ones at home. The trade-off against a plain bar blade is the moving hinges, which need a bit more care than a solid one-piece opener and can loosen with years of hard daily use, though this is normal wear rather than a fault. For occasional home use, it will comfortably outlast the bottles you open with it.

Questions about this product

Is a two-stage lever corkscrew easier to use than a straight pull?

Yes, that's the main advantage of this design over a plain corkscrew. Resting the lever's first notch on the bottle lip and pulling partway, then repositioning to the second notch, spreads the effort over two shorter pulls instead of one long, awkward one. It takes noticeably less hand and wrist strength than pulling a worm screw straight out, and it gives you more control over older or drier corks that are prone to crumbling or breaking apart mid-pull.

How do I stop the hinges from loosening over time?

Regular use will naturally work the hinges over months or years of service, which is normal wear for any folding tool and not a fault to worry about. Keeping it dry rather than left wet in a drawer, and avoiding using it as a lever for anything other than corks and caps, helps it last considerably longer. If a hinge does loosen noticeably or feel loose in the hand, replacing the tool is more practical than trying to tighten a riveted joint yourself.
