Description

Wine sold by the glass in England and Wales has to be served in set measures, and this stainless steel wine measure is made to two of the standard sizes: 125ml and 250ml. It works the same way as a spirit thimble — fill it level to the top and pour it straight into the glass — but it's sized and shaped for wine rather than spirits. Like the spirit measures, it's stamped to confirm its capacity, which is what you need if you're pouring wine for sale rather than just for yourself.

It suits pubs, restaurants and any venue that pours wine by the glass rather than always opening a fresh bottle per order, giving front-of-house staff a fast, consistent way to check a pour without guessing. At home, it's a straightforward way to keep glass sizes even when entertaining. One thing to flag: it only covers 125ml and 250ml, so if your wine list is built around 175ml glasses you'll need to cover that size separately.

Questions about this product

What wine glass sizes are pubs and restaurants required to serve?

Wine sold by the glass in England and Wales must be served in 125ml, 175ml or 250ml measures, or a multiple of these, and the venue must make at least one of these sizes available and show it on the price list. Sparkling wine is exempt from this rule. This measure covers the 125ml and 250ml options; if you also serve 175ml glasses you'll need to measure that separately.

Can this measure be used for spirits as well as wine?

It isn't designed for it. Wine measures are sized for 125ml and 250ml pours, well above single and double spirit measures of 25ml, 35ml, 50ml or 70ml, so using one for spirits wouldn't give an accurate or legally compliant measure. Keep a separate stainless steel thimble measure for spirits and use this one for wine.
