Description

The thimble measure is the classic bar measure: a stainless steel cone that you fill to the brim and tip straight into the glass. There's no mechanism, no moving parts, and nothing to go wrong. It comes in 25ml, 35ml, 50ml and 70ml, covering single and double spirit measures used across the UK, and each size is stamped to confirm it holds the volume it claims, which matters if you're selling spirits by the measure in a licensed premises.

For trade use, a stamped thimble measure is the standard low-cost option, and many bars keep a set on a rail or caddy by the well for quick access. At home it's just as useful for consistent pours when making cocktails, or simply for keeping track of how much you're drinking. The main limitation is technique: pouring accurately from an open cone takes a steadier hand than a push-up or pourer measure, and it's easy to overfill if you're rushing. If speed matters more than tradition, look at the push-up spirit measure instead.

Questions about this product

What size thimble measure do I need for a single or double spirit?

In the UK, a single spirit measure is either 25ml or 35ml, and it's up to the venue to choose which one they use and stick to it. A double is simply twice that, so 50ml or 70ml. If you're serving the public, check which single measure you've registered with your licensing authority and use the matching sizes throughout, rather than mixing 25ml and 35ml stock.

Do I need a stamped or certified measure at home?

No. Certification and stamping are only a legal requirement for premises selling alcohol by the measure, such as pubs and restaurants. At home, an uncertified measure of the same size pours exactly the same amount. Buying the certified version isn't wasted money though u2014 it's made to the same tolerance as trade stock, so you get a reliably accurate pour either way.
