Description

This fine strainer does the same job as a conical mesh strainer — catching fine ice shards, pulp and herb fragments during a second pour — but does it with a sprung, squeeze handle rather than a plain bowl. Squeeze the handle to open the mesh, rest it against the rim of the glass, and let go so it flattens and holds itself in place while you pour, freeing your other hand.

It's genuinely useful if you find holding a bowl-shaped strainer steady with one hand while pouring with the other a bit fiddly, particularly over a narrow glass. The trade-off is a hinge and spring mechanism, which has a couple more places for pulp and seeds to get stuck than a plain mesh bowl, so rinse it straight after use rather than leaving it. If you're not bothered by holding a conical strainer one-handed, a plain fine mesh strainer does exactly the same straining job for less money and less to clean.

Questions about this product

How is this different from a conical mesh strainer?

They filter to the same standard u2014 both catch fine ice, pulp and herb fragments during a second pour. The difference is how you hold them: this one has a sprung handle that opens the mesh and then holds it flat against the glass rim on its own, leaving your other hand free, while a conical strainer is a plain bowl you hold in place yourself throughout. Pick whichever you find easier to use one-handed.

Is the spring mechanism harder to clean than a plain strainer?

A little more than a plain strainer, yes. The hinge and spring give pulp, seeds and pith a couple of extra places to lodge that a simple mesh bowl doesn't have, so it's worth rinsing the strainer straight after use rather than letting anything dry inside the joint. Build that habit and it's no real hassle; leave it uncleaned for a while and the hinge becomes noticeably fiddlier to get properly clean.
