Description

The kit includes a small chamber for wood chips, a dome to trap smoke over a finished drink, and a mixed bag of chips — usually oak, applewood and cherry. Light a small pinch with a handheld butane torch (not included) until they smoulder and smoke rather than flame, then hold the dome over the drink briefly before serving. The effect is aromatic: smoke clings to the glass and the drink's surface, adding a smoky top note on the nose and first sip, not a change to the spirit underneath.

It suits spirits with some weight — whisky, aged rum, mezcal (already smoky, so it reinforces rather than adds), and stirred drinks like an Old Fashioned or a Boulevardier. It's the wrong tool for bright, citrus-led drinks or delicate gin cocktails, where smoke just clashes with the flavour. On safety: only light the chips somewhere ventilated, away from curtains, paper and anything else flammable, and never leave a lit torch unattended. Let the chips smoulder rather than flame, and give the chamber a minute to cool before handling it again.

Questions about this product

What does smoking a cocktail actually do to the drink?

It adds a smoky aroma to the surface of the drink and the inside of the glass, which you notice mainly on the nose and in the first couple of sips u2014 it doesn't smoke the spirit all the way through or change how it tastes once poured and drunk down. Think of it as a garnish for smell rather than a flavour change to the whole drink. It works best on spirits that can carry some extra weight, like whisky, aged rum or mezcal, and adds least to anything already light or citrus-forward, where the smoke just sits oddly on top.

Is it safe to use a cocktail smoker indoors?

Yes, if you're sensible about it: use it somewhere with a bit of ventilation, keep it well away from curtains, paper, and anything else that catches easily, and never leave a lit torch unattended even for a few seconds. Let the wood chips smoulder rather than flame u2014 a small amount of smoke is what you want, not visible fire u2014 and let the chamber cool fully before you pack it away. If you're smoking in a small, enclosed room, crack a window; the smoke itself is mild but it can set off a sensitive smoke alarm.
