Description

A cheater tin is the smaller of the two tins in a tin-on-tin Boston shaker. It sits inside the mouth of the 28oz tin, rather than over it, which is what gives tin-on-tin shakers their fast, positive seal. On its own it also works as a jigger-sized tin for building a drink before you tip it into the larger tin, or as a small vessel for a single serve.

Most people buy a cheater tin to replace a dented or missing one from an existing set, rather than as a first purchase — it's cheaper than buying a whole new shaker for the sake of one tin. It's also a straightforward way to convert a Boston shaker glass set into an all-metal tin-on-tin set: keep your 28oz tin, add this, and retire the glass. If you're buying your very first shaker, look at a full tin-on-tin set instead; buy this on its own once you already own the larger tin.

Questions about this product

What's the difference between a cheater tin and a regular shaker tin?

A cheater tin is smaller u2014 18oz against the standard 28oz u2014 and is designed to sit inside the larger tin's mouth rather than over it. That inside fit is what makes a tin-on-tin shaker seal quickly and separate easily after shaking. You can't use two 28oz tins together in the same way, so the two sizes work as a matched pair rather than interchangeable parts, and each has its own job to do.

Do I need to buy a full set, or can I just buy the cheater tin?

Buy it on its own if you already own a 28oz tin and simply need a replacement, or if you're upgrading from a Boston shaker glass to an all-metal tin-on-tin set. If you don't yet own either half of a Boston shaker, a full tin-on-tin set works out cheaper than buying the two tins separately, so start there instead and come back for a replacement cheater tin only if one is later lost or dented.
