Description

This is the glass half of a traditional Boston shaker: a thick-walled pint glass that seats over the mouth of a 28oz tin to form a seal. Bartenders who learned on tin-and-glass tend to stick with it — you can see the ice and liquid while you shake, and the glass gives a stable base for building a drink before sealing it. It also works on its own as a mixing glass or a straight-sided measure.

Glass is the one part of a Boston shaker that can chip or crack, so replacing just the glass is common — there's no need to buy a new tin as well. It's also a reasonable upgrade if you currently use a cheater tin and want the classic look and feel instead. If you've never used a tin-and-glass set, be aware it takes a firmer seal than tin-on-tin and a confident tap to break it afterwards; tin-on-tin is a little more forgiving for a beginner.

Questions about this product

Will this fit any 28oz shaker tin?

Boston shaker tins and glasses are a standard size across the trade, so a 16oz glass will seal against a 28oz tin regardless of where each piece came from. Fit can vary very slightly between manufacturers, so if you're particular about a perfect seal, buying the tin and glass together as a matched set is the safer bet. Buying just the glass to replace a broken one is fine in the vast majority of cases.

Is glass or a cheater tin better for the top half of a shaker?

Neither is better outright, and most people who use both switch depending on the drink. Glass lets you see the ice and liquid while you shake and gives a stable, weighted base for building a drink, but it can chip or crack and needs a firmer strike to break the seal. A cheater tin is lighter, unbreakable, and seals and separates more easily, which suits a busy bar or someone still building confidence with a shaker.
