How do I know which keg coupler I need?

Ask the brewery or check the keg itself u2014 the coupler type is a property of the keg's valve, not of your bar. As a rough guide in the UK, S-type (Sankey) covers most European lagers and many UK brands, G-type (Grundy) covers the Coors and Molson Coors range, A-type is Guinness in Great Britain, U-type is Stella Artois and Guinness in Ireland, and D-type is common on American imports.

Can I force a coupler onto the wrong keg?

No, and you should not try. The probe and locking lugs are machined to different patterns for each standard, so a mismatched head will not seat. Forcing it risks damaging the keg valve, which is the brewery's property.

Do keg couplers wear out?

The body lasts for years; the seals do not. A coupler that leaks around the keg neck or will not hold pressure usually needs a new washer set rather than replacing.
