Description

These bitters are 0% ABV, made without an alcohol base rather than simply used in amounts small enough to be negligible. That's a genuine difference from most bitters sold for cocktails, which are usually alcohol-based at high proof. Available in Aromatic, Orange and Grapefruit, each works as a drop-in replacement for the equivalent alcoholic bitters in a recipe.

Bitters are worth having regardless of what else is in the glass, because the usual reason a mocktail tastes flat isn't the missing alcohol — it's missing bitterness and acid, the things that give a drink structure and stop it tasting like sweetened juice. A few dashes in a soda, a shrub or a mocktail base does more for the finished drink than another syrup would. The bottle keeps well: with no alcohol to act as a preservative it should be stored in a cool, dark place, but the concentration of flavour compounds means it still lasts a long time compared with an opened syrup.

Questions about this product

Are these really 0% alcohol, unlike normal cocktail bitters?

Yes. Standard bitters are usually made with a high-proof alcohol base, though the amount used per drink u2014 a few dashes u2014 means the alcohol you actually consume is negligible, not zero. These bitters are made without any alcohol base at all, so the ABV is genuinely 0%. That matters if you're avoiding alcohol for medical, religious or personal reasons rather than just cutting down, since 'negligible' and 'none' aren't the same thing when it counts.

Why do mocktails need bitters at all?

Because the flat taste people associate with mocktails usually comes from missing bitterness and acid, not from missing alcohol. A soda and syrup on their own read as simply sweet. A few dashes of bitters add the savoury, slightly astringent note that a cocktail's spirit would otherwise contribute, giving the drink more structure. It's a small addition with a disproportionate effect, and one of the cheapest ways to make an alcohol-free drink taste properly balanced rather than like diluted cordial.
