Description

This set pairs six standard tools — a shaker, a 25ml/50ml jigger, a strainer, a bar spoon, a muddler and a pourer — with a deck of recipe cards, one drink per card with ingredients, method and glassware. It's aimed at solving the actual problem most beginners have, which isn't lacking equipment but not knowing what to make with it.

The cards cover well-known classics — margarita, whisky sour, mojito, negroni and the like — rather than obscure or seasonal drinks, and there are no photos, just text. If you already use a cocktail app or have a book you like, the cards won't add much and you're better off with a plain set for less money. But if you've never made a cocktail and don't know a daiquiri from a Dark and Stormy, having 20-odd recipes to hand while you're learning to use the shaker is genuinely useful, and takes the guesswork out of the first few weeks. All metal tools are stainless steel and dishwasher safe; the cards obviously aren't.

Questions about this product

How many recipes are on the cards, and are they good ones?

The deck covers around 20 to 30 well-known cocktails u2014 think margarita, whisky sour, mojito, negroni, espresso martini u2014 rather than obscure or invented drinks. Each card gives ingredients, method and suggested glassware in plain text, no photos. They're a solid starting reference for someone learning, not a substitute for a proper cocktail book if you want more depth, technique explanations or less common recipes.

Do I need the cards if I already use a recipe app?

Not really u2014 if you're already comfortable finding recipes on your phone, the cards won't tell you much you can't get elsewhere for free. Their value is for people who haven't started yet and don't know where to begin: having the recipes physically next to the tools removes one excuse for not trying. If that's not you, a plain set without cards covers the same tools for less money.
