Description

This set covers the three pieces a stirred drink actually needs: a 600ml mixing glass, a twisted-handle bar spoon and a julep strainer, which is the perforated, bowl-shaped strainer traditionally used with a mixing glass rather than the spring-loaded hawthorne strainer built for a shaker. Buying them together means the spoon's handle length and the strainer's size are matched to the glass, rather than finding out afterwards that a spoon bought separately is a few centimetres too short to comfortably reach the bottom.

Stirring is genuinely simpler to get right than shaking, but it still benefits from the right tools: a spoon with a twisted shaft rolls between your fingers more smoothly than a plain rod, keeping the stir even without you having to grip and drag the handle round by hand. A jug and a slotted spoon will produce a drinkable stirred cocktail, so none of this is strictly necessary — but if you're stirring negronis, martinis or old fashioneds often enough to notice, a matched set removes the small frictions a mismatched setup adds up to.

Questions about this product

What's the actual difference between a julep strainer and the hawthorne strainer used with a shaker?

A julep strainer is a solid, perforated bowl shape designed to sit inside a mixing glass and hold back ice while you pour, with no moving parts. A hawthorne strainer has a coiled spring around the edge and is built to fit over the rim of a shaker tin rather than a glass. Either can technically strain a stirred drink, but a julep strainer sits more securely in a glass and doesn't have a spring to trap residue or need drying out properly.

Do I need a special spoon, or would any long spoon in the kitchen drawer do?

A long kitchen spoon will stir a drink, so it's not a hard requirement. The twisted shaft on a proper bar spoon lets it roll smoothly between your fingers and thumb as you stir, which keeps the ice moving in one even direction with less wrist effort than dragging a straight handle round by hand. It's a comfort and technique improvement rather than something that changes the finished drink itself, though most people who switch to one don't go back to a plain spoon afterwards.
